Trend of Stream Selection in Msc Programs at IOE, Pulchowk Campus

Entrance Examination of Masters Programs for various streams at Institute of Engineering (IOE), Pulchowk Campus was held on November 1st 2014 for academic year 2071/2014. There are 16 Msc programs offered by the Tribhuvan University (TU) affiliated Engineering wing which are categorized into 7 major streams namely Civil, Electronics and Computer, Electrical, Mechanical and Industrial, Planning and Architecture, Disaster and Planning, and Applied Science for about 315 seats in total.

We have taken a brief study on the trends of the stream selection by the applicants of Msc programs which started from first week of October. A total of 1631 students who completed Bachelor (BE or B.Arch) applied for the Entrance Exam conducted by the Entrance Exam Board of IOE.
Civil & Agricultural Engineering (CA) seems to be the first choice of the students which marks about 56 percent of the total candidates. The number is usual because of higher number of seats for Bachelor in Civil Engineering (BCE) in the BE entrance exam too. The second choice is Electronics and Computer Engineering for which 343 students submitted the online form for entrance exam. The stream includes subject mattes of Electrical Circuit and System, Electronics Circuit and System, Computer Architecture, Communication System, Object Oriented Programming Languages and Discrete Structure in the entrance exam curriculum.

The other streams share the percentage as:Electrical(11%), Mechanical and Industrial(4%), Planning and Architecture(6%). Only 8 students preferred Disaster and Planning whereas Applied Science became the choice of just 4 students.

The number of female applicants are seven times less than male applicants which counts 1398 that makes 85% of the total applicants.

We are analyzing some more data and will update soon.

The result of IOE Masters Entrance exam is scheduled to be published on 20th of Kartik-2071 (6th November 2014).

The above study is based on the data sheet of applicants for Msc Entrance Exam 2071 published by Tribhuvan University, Institute of Engineering, Entrance Exam Board, Chakupat, Lalitpur.

Wikipedia Zero Arrives in Nepal

In an event organized on the occasion of Education Freedom Day at Smart Samaj, I had asked a question to the community representative of Nepal for Wikimedia Foundation “Is there any chance of Nepali Telecom operators adopting Wikipedia Zero?” The answer was we have to wait for long time.
But I got surprised and excited from this news on Republica Online today, few month after the event. Ncell which is second largest internet service provider in Nepal has finally joined hands with the Foundation and launched the ambitious project launched to reduce barriers to accessing free knowledge via world largest online encyclopedia. This is a great news for technically emerging countries like Nepal. From May 7, 2014 onwards, Ncell subscribers having smartphone can access Wikipedia contents absolutely free of cost without any activation hurdles.
But still some sad thing lies here. People having simple mobile phone running native browsers and opera mini cannot utilize this service at this time which Ncell has said because of technical difficulties but the privately owned Telesonera’s child telecom operator is providing facebook pack which can be accessed via all mobile handsets and browsers.
How to ensure free version?
To make sure that you are accessing the free version of Wikipedia from your internet browser, watch a “free access” banner the top of each page confirming freeness of the page. Surfing Wikipedia versions: m.wikipedia & zero.wikipedia are included on free access for Nepal.
Wikipedia Zero is an initiative rolled out in 2011 & launched by the non-profit organization, Wikimedia Foundation under which partnerships are made with telecom service providers from various part of the world to waive data charges for accessing Wikipedia to their mobile subscribers. Wikipedia Zero works in the same way as Facebook Zero, offering low cost for accessing certain popular websites. The service has been so far launched in more than 16 countries. With the view of expanding the free knowledge on Wikipedia, special version of wikipedia.com is launched which can be accessed through zero.wikipedia.org which is a light weight text-only version of the Wikipedia mobile site. Today’s news means that almost half-a-billion people worldwide now have access to free Wikipedia on their mobile phones.
The Foundation has estimated the benefit for the telecom service providers under the partnerships that 28% of existing readers would be more likely to buy service from the operator. The full list of telecom operators launching the program can be accessed through here.
Hope the largest and state owned telecom operator, Nepal Telecom (NT) will also join hand on this project soon.

Lets Tweet – A Call for Nepali Students

Yes, we all have Facebook account and hope you are utilizing that apart from some useless chats and likes. We are going to talk about next biggest social media - Twitter. Lets start with a recent twitter survey which shows that only 5% of the Nepali Twitter users are students. Though the survey was conducted some months ago, the number might have increased a bit lets say 8% ? or 10% ? Let whatever that be for now because we are not talking about increasing only number but also on how we could be benefited from one of the wide social network. And next big thing I want to clear from very beginning is that Twitter is not just about following and followers. Also, I don't want to argue on which is better: Facebook or Twitter, as all have pros and cons.

Though it seems to be like twitter has been focused on business and professional branding and marketing, but the truth is far beyond this. Many studies have been conducted on the impact of twitter on the educational grade of students and most of them have shown positive result too. Undoubtedly, the network increases your online presence and develops connections among people apart from increasing in learning habit. It could be great opportunity to build meaningful relations with people in your field of interest which may turn out to be very important in future too. It could be very beneficial to develop your personal brand on what are you all about just like companies build their brand image.

Twitter could be very much helpful for students from various angles. If you are having problem on your topic or got stuck on tutorial, just post your question & wait for response. Most people are happy to help. And one thing, don't be shy about asking your followers to Retweet your problem. There may discussions taking place on Twitter which could be your field of interest. Conduct a search for that if someone is talking about the subject & join in to get insights to broaden your horizon of knowledge. By increasing involvement through this, you can reach out to experts and scholars in the field you are researching. Hashtags can allow for a quicker search, leading the students to the exact information, or contacts, they need. Many libraries and archives have twitter accounts which could be much helpful Twitter to conduct research.
But don't limit tweets on educational stuffs only. Many influential persons, political leaders, celebrities are active in twitter to whom you can ask queries and leave responses. Twitter feeds from various news sites, blogs and companies could provide plenty of information on what is happening around the world within a second. These days, twitter has become a major news source. News portals seems to be in competition to share breaking news in twitter prior to updating their sites. And yes, unhealthy competition has raised problem of sharing unauthorized news. So, beware of this and wait for confirmations from some reliable source.

Surveys have shown that twitter pulls more students into discussion which is thus helpful in making collaboration in studies and other extra activities too along with playing active role to overcome the shyness barrier. As most of tweets are publicly view-able (it can also be made protected), many people can have discussion at the same time solely through a web rather than few peoples in a group which make it really interesting to have online conversation.

Since some days, I have been seeing donation box to help an engineering student of Pulchowk Campus. If we could publicize that by raising a campaign via the social media, it could definitely be productive. While writing this, I remembered about TFC (Tweet for Cause) Nepal and Youth for blood campaign. They are informal group active on social media which are conducting social works from small donations made by light hearted people. So, it teaches us to be more organized and collaborate together to spread awareness & do something for the betterment of the society. For many users, sharing and conversing about the causes and charities they care about is a big part of building an identity too.

Apart from huge benefits, excessive and improper use of the social media which have deeply infiltrated our life may lead to serious problem or accident too. Lots of criticism can be heard made over social media and the effect it has on the way students process and retrieve information & how distracting that could be. Considering the fact, a suburban Los Angeles school district in US has hired a firm to monitor social media activities of students. However, social media like Twitter offers plenty of opportunities of learning and interactivity for students in college that will also assist them later in future.

Say Bye-Bye to Scratch Cards- Go Green

Much has been said about the going green and caring for the environment but what will be changed if we don’t change our-self. Though we organize many programs to discuss about  environmental issues but we rarely think of how can we be a part of saving our precious environment.

Some changes that can be made in our daily life can be great contribution to make our surrounding clean, green and healthy and avoid the earth as a whole from global warming and other natural disasters. It is the duty and responsibility of all mankind to be loyal towards the well being of our fragile planet.Because of development and inventions of different means of communication, the world has been a small village. Now, we cannot imagine our days without various communication devices. For their operation, of course we need to pay their usage charge to the service providers for which the use of scratch cards provided with some digits for account recharge.
For recharge of mobile phone to DTH to other internet usage charges, the use of scratch cards is popular all over the world.  And it is clear that that the scratch cards which we use frequently is invaluable except the code, are made of papers whose only source is tree. So, while using each such cards, we are deteriorating our environment. Though, using some cards may not seem to be of great matter but millions of cards are being used in the world which is obviously leading deforestation.

According to a study, for every 20,000 scratch cards not used we save a treeIf we could reduce the rates at which we use paper, we will have a great impact to the way trees are being cut.
The news of natural calamities hitting in some countries has been regular news these days. So, there is extreme need to adopt the alternative means of account recharge to curb the use of such paper cards & be environment friendly to conserve the natural resources too. So, there is extreme need of strategic steps to eliminate use of paper based airtime recharge vouchers i.e. adopting paperless transactions which ultimately contribute to environmental conversation. It is possible to recharge the accounts without having to use a scratch card i.e. via cleaner, greener electronic top up system.

That may include online recharge or MPOS or other means which involves no use of scratch cards. Here, printing, packing, transporting, scratching and dumping of top up cards are of no use as the lines are easily topped up by simply giving a mobile number to be topped up and the airtime is sent directly to the mobile number.
When you recharge through these smart means, you are contributing more or less in the conservation of environment. Internet banking, mobile banking has made the payments easier and smarter for which there is no need to travel to nearby outlet to buy the cards which ultimately saves your fuel and precious time too. Paperless recharge prevents not only the exploitation of trees during their production, but also checks the littering of thrown used scratch cards along with their plastic wrappers which thereby makes environment healthy and conducive for living beings.  It is amazing  according to a beleivable source, about 94 percent of all the people identify littering as a major environmental problem and yet many continue to throw paper carelessly.

By quitting these kinds of offline counterparts, there is big gain but no pain. Recharging system is faster and easier to use than the Scratch card. It is also more advantageous than the scratch card in the fact that it saves the users’  Time and Energy. The time and energy required on scratching a scratch card can be forgone for an electronic recharge that takes just a few seconds to complete.

Another benefit is that account recharge can be done  at any time and place regardless of whatever amount the customer wants to buy as long as it is available. There is still a hot debate about the risk of cancer by scratching Scratch hologram of such cards but if we use the new technology of online payments, there is no point of affecting precious health too. There would be no risk of damaging cards due to water, fire or other calamities during the transportation or while scratching cards. Even we don’t need to worry about the validity. Though, electronic top-up service might have been introduced by the telecommunication companies for various reasons but direcltly or indirectly, it is working a lot in environment conservation.
The current position of Nepal in terms of mobile recharge method is as this figure according to Nepal-pay
Though some new systems of online payment may be difficult task for some uneducated people but MPOS system and payments via banks and other financial institutions are excellent alternatives. Some of the online payment system is implemented by the telecom operators of Nepal. Nepal telecom has provided such system of payment via different service providers  like: “Nepal-pay” Cash payments kiosks network, Paybill which also supports mobile banking recharge system and many other whose full info list can be accessed through here. Such new & online systems are beneficial not only to the customers but also to the telecom service providers as the expenses of production, handling, transportation, distribution and manual labor are reduced.

According to pay-bill, telecom operator gains a lot via the system, 3 SMS are generated for each transaction while recharging by mobile banking through which the operators can gain a lot. So, why not bring some offers to attract the customers. The full details about further benefits to customers and operators according to paybill can be downloaded from here.

Desclaimer: I am not associated with any of these service providers.
